Psalm 32

3 Lessons from Psalm 32

Psalm 32:1-11 ESV

1 Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity,
and in whose spirit there is no deceit.

3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away
through my groaning all day long.

4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me;
my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah

5 I acknowledged my sin to you,
and I did not cover my iniquity;
I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

6 Therefore let everyone who is godly
offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found;
surely in the rush of great waters,
they shall not reach him.

7 You are a hiding place for me;
you preserve me from trouble;
you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah

8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

9 Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding,
which must be curbed with bit and bridle,
or it will not stay near you.

10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,
but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.

11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous,
and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

3 Lessons From Psalm 32

Lesson #1 Our Sins Lead To Death

  • Verses 1-4

1 Blessed (an interjection,  O HAPPY Is The Man!) is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man against whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. Psalm of blessing and worship begging and ending

CONTRASTED with Blessedness is the Burden

3 For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away (waxed old) through my groaning (roaring) all day long. (worn out, become old, used up completely)

4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer.     Selah

 David’s instruction on the different forms sin takes

  • Transgression- rebellion or trespass
  • Sin – an offence, disobedience, not hitting the mark
  • Iniquity – perversion, condition of guilt, we are at fault
  • Deceit – Guile, Treachery, Deception

Romans 6:23 reminds us that – the wage of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord

Lesson #2 Our Confession Leads To Forgiveness

      • Verse 5

I acknowledged my sin to You, and I did not cover my iniquity;  I said, “I will confess my transgressions (tresspass, rebellion) to the Lord,” and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah

“God’s forgiveness enables us to go on. Forgiveness is what gives us the ability to survive with God even though we fail time and again. Forgiveness is the centerpiece of the Christian life because without it, the crucifixion is of no effect, a relationship between people and God is impossible, and the heavenly hope unattainable.“

Joel Salatin

1John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Romans 10:9-10if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.

1John 1:8
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.(^This is not reality) If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Psalm 36:6
Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in the rush of great waters, they shall not reach him.

    • Acknowledge
    • Do Not Hide
    • Confess

Lesson #3 Our God Leads To Himself

Psalm 36:7-8
You are a hiding place for me; You preserve me from trouble; You surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.

Verses 9-10a

9  Be not like a horse or a mule, without understanding, which must be curbed with bit and bridle, or it will not stay near you.

10 Many are the sorrows of the wicked,

2Corinthians 5:21-6:3
21 For our sake [He God] made [Him Jesus] to be sin who knew no sin, so that in [Him Jesus] we might become the righteousness of God. Working together with Him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says,

“In a favorable time I listened to you,
and in a day of salvation I have helped you.”

Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry,

That is my prayer that we put no obstacle between anyone and the salvation of the Lord.

Verses 10b-11

… but steadfast love surrounds the one who trusts in the Lord.

11 Be glad in the Lord, and rejoice, O righteous; and shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

Ephesians 4:32

… and we forgive others in the same way that God for Christ’s sake has forgiven you.

  • The one who is Righteous
  • The one who Trusts in the Lord
  • Upright in Heart
  • The one whose transgression is forgiven
  • Whose sin is covered.
  • Whom the Lord counts no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit
