When You Are Confused

Habakkuk 1:1-13

  1. Habakkuk BURDENED

Habakkuk 1:1a
The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.

  1. Habakkuk BEWILDERED

Why doesn’t God answer me when I pray?

Habakkuk 1:2
2O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save!

Why does God allow so much evil in the world?

Habakkuk 1:3-4 NLT
3Must I forever see this sin and misery all around me? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight.

4The law has become paralyzed and useless, and there is no justice given in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, and justice is perverted with bribes and trickery.

Why does God allow indecent people to hurt the decent people?

Habakkuk 1:13 NLT
13…But will you, who cannot allow sin in any form, stand idly by while they swallow us up? Should you be silent while the wicked destroy people who are more righteous than they?

Habakkuk 1:5-11 MSG
“Look around at the godless nations. Look long and hard. Brace yourself for a shock. Something’s about to take place and you’re going to find it hard to believe.
I’m about to raise up Babylonians to punish you, Babylonians, fierce and ferocious—
World-conquering Babylon, grabbing up nations right and left A dreadful and terrible people, making up its own rules as it goes.

Their horses run like the wind, attack like bloodthirsty wolves A stampede of galloping horses thunders out of nowhere They descend like vultures circling in on carrion.

They’re out to kill. Death is on their minds. They collect victims like squirrels gathering nuts. They mock kings, poke fun at generals,
Spit on forts, and leave them in the dust They’ll all be blown away by the wind. Brazen in sin, they call strength their god.”

Habakkuk 1:12-13 MSG
God, you’re from eternity, aren’t you? Holy God, we aren’t going to die, are we?
God, you chose Babylonians for your judgment work? Rock-Solid God, you gave them the job of discipline?

But you can’t be serious! You can’t condone evil! So why don’t you do something about this? Why are you silent now? This outrage! Evil men swallow up the righteous and you stand around and watch!

Are you not from everlasting, O Lord my God, my Holy One? We shall not die.
O Lord, you have ordained them as a judgment, and you, O Rock, have established them for reproof.

13 You who are of purer eyes than to see evil and cannot look at wrong,
why do you idly look at traitors and remain silent when the wicked swallows up
the man more righteous than he?

  1. Habakkuk BEING STILL

Habakkuk 2:1 (NLT)
I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guard post.
There I will wait to see what the Lord says and how he will answer my complaint.

Habakkuk 2:2
Then the Lord said to me, “Write my answer plainly on tablets,
so that a runner can carry the correct message to others.

This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.

“Look at the proud! They trust in themselves, and their lives are crooked…

Habakkuk 2:4b
THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY HIS FAITH.

  1. Habakkuk BELIEVING

Habakkuk 3:16-19
I hear, and my body trembles; my lips quiver at the sound;
rottenness enters into my bones; my legs tremble beneath me.
Yet I will quietly wait for the day of trouble
to come upon people who invade us.

17 Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines,
the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food,
the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls,

18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.

19 God, the Lord, is my strength; he makes my feet like the deer’s;  he makes me tread on my high places.
