Let There Be Light

Genesis 1:1-5

Let There Be Light
God’s Glory Revealed In Light Genesis 1:1-5

  • Our guide for talking about these subjects that no human witnessed

    2 Peter 1:20-21

knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
  • Hebrews 11:3
By faith we understand that the universe was created by the WORD of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

What is the Eye Witness account of creation?

  • Genesis 1:1-5 – Day 1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
  • 3 And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
    • On Day 1 Light is on the Earth,
    • Light = was good, separate from the darkness, God named it Day

Genesis 1:14-18
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, 15 and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.

16 And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.
17 And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness.

  • What God was doing on Day 1 is now being given over to His creation on Day 4.

Genesis 1:18-19
And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was evening and there was morning, the fourth day.

  • We see the 4th day of creation
    • Sun, Moon, Stars, All lights in the heavens
  • The Light on Day 1 was not the Sun, Moon or Stars

WHY did God have Light on Day 1 and wait until Day 4 to create lights to do what was already happening?

    • What God says about himself  and light in scripture.
    • Give us a greater awe and worship of our Creator Triune God.

Psalm 104:1-2
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, 2 covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.

  • God’s appearance is described as being covered in and with Light,  a Majestic Splendor to behold

John 1:1-3
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

  • Word”: in the beginning, with God, Was God, HE(vs2), made all things,

John 1:4-5
4In him (the word) was life, and the life was the light of men. 5The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  • Word”: is Life, Light of Men
  • “Light”: Life OF HIM; Light of Men, shines in darkness, overcomes darkness
  • If the Word is a Him, That Him gives Light From HIS Life to men then WHO is the Word?

John 1:6-9
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light that all might believe through him. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

John The Baptist’s Bears Witness

John1:29-36
29  The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 32 And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son  of God.” 35The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”

    • These verses teach us that the Son was present in creation.
    • The Word was in the beginning, The word was the Life and Light, John was sent to bare witness of who the Light was.  He identified Jesus as the Light.  The Lamb of God
    • In Genesis 1:1&2 we see the Father and the Spirit clearly. And now reading John 1 we see the Son clearly.
    • The 2nd person of the Trinity is the Son, the Lamb, the Life, The WORD, The LIGHT – all these describing and Identifying Jesus

“IN the beginning GOD CREATED. The heavens and earth. He(Jesus the Word) was in the beginning with God,  all things were made through Him and with him was not anything made that was made”

  Hebrews 1:1-3
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.

  • God’s has spoken:  in Creation and in these Last Days
  • In both cases God speaks through His SON through whom God created the world

3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

  • Jesus is the radiance, or brightness; the shining forth of God’s glory
  • All power belongs to Him!
  • Jesus is not a created being,  “When God said let there be light;” that was not the beginning of Jesus. Rather God saying let there be light was a shining forth of God’s glory , JESUS, onto the Earth

Genesis 1:1-5. This is the beginning of God’s creation

  • Future Light of Jesus that we will one day behold

Revelation 21:10-11
10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.

Revelation 21:23-24
23 And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. 24 By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it,

  • Lights in the Heavens give up the authority they once were given in Genesis on Day 4. They are not needed anymore.
    • We MUST NOT take God’s testimony of Creation lightly
    • To NOT BELIEVE what God has said about Creation simply because Man has supposedly discovered some Law of Nature that disagrees with God’s testimony is not wise. It’s foolish
    • It is not a trivial thing, These facts are stated throughout God’s word from Genesis to Revelation.  To undermine this testimony is to undermine the authority of God’s word.

Hebrews 11:3
3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.
