Christmas Prophecies
1. Christ Would be Born of a Virgin
Prophecy – Isaiah 7:14
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel”
Fulfillment – Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel which being interpreted is God with us”
2. Christ Would be filled with Power, Peace, and the Spirit from Birth
Prophecy – Isaiah 9:6
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”
Fulfillment – Luke 4:18
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.
3. Christ Would be born in Bethlehem
Prophecy –Micha 5:2
But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel;
whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Fulfillment Matthew 2:10
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem”
4. Christ Would Escape to Egypt
Prophecy – Hosea 11:1
“When Israel was a child, I loved him and out of Egypt I called my son”
Fulfillment – Matthew 2:13
“An angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him'”
5. A Star Would Point the Way to Christ
Prophecy – Numbers 24:17a
“I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; A star shall come forth from Jacob, and a scepter shall rise from Israel…
Fulfillment –Matthew 2:1-2
“Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east, and have come to worship Him”
6. Kings would present gifts to Him
Prophecy – Psalm 72:10
The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
Fulfillment – Matthew 2:11
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
7. He would be worshipped by Shepherds
Prophecy – Psalm 72:9a
They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him…
Fulfillment – Luke 2:8-14
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. The angels came to the shepherds to tell them the good news of Christ’s birth, and they hurried to find him and worship Him.
8. Great Sorrow at the Time of His Birth and Many Children Murdered
Prophecy –Jeremiah 31:15
“A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping. Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because her children are no more”
Fulfillment – Matthew 2:16-18
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, 18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
9. The Entire Lineage would be Confirmed Through Scripture
Prophecy – Jesus was from the line of Abraham (Genesis 12:3), Isaac (Genesis 17:21, Genesis 26:4), Jacob (Genesis 28:14), Judah (Genesis 49:8–12), Jesse (Isaiah 11:1), and David (Isaiah 9:7, Jeremiah 23:5).
