The Doctrine of the Virgin Birth

Pastor Maddox outlines the importance of believing all the claims of scripture about the birth of Christ.

The doctrine is direct prophecy of the Old Testament.

Isaiah 7:14
Therefore the Lord Himself will give a sign:  Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call His name Immanuel.

The doctrine is divine proof of the New Testament.

Matthew 1:18-23
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows:  After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit.  Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly.  But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is the Holy Spirit.  And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.”  So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:  “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

The doctrine is critical to understanding the gospel.

1.The doctrine determines your attitudes toward the pre-existence of Christ.

John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”

2.The doctrine determines your attitude toward the pre-existence of Christ

3.The doctrine determines your attitude toward scripture.

4.The doctrine determines your attitude toward Christ

The doctrine is significant in our lives

1.The plan of God for salvation.

Romans 5:12-17
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned—(For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.  Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgressions of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.  But the free gift is not like the offense.  For if by the one man’s offense many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.  And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned.  For the judgment which came from one offense resulted in condemnation, but the free gift which came from many offenses resulted in justification.  For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.)

2.The plan of God for our advocacy.

1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.

1 John 2:1
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.  And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

3.The plan of God to unlock the mystery of Christ death.
